Background

Systems Change for Health is a competency-based training program based on a curriculum developed by James Emery, MPH and Carolyn Crump, PhD at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.  The curriculum was developed recognizing that health problems are influenced by systems, policies and environments that either sustain healthy behaviors or fail to support them.  Many of our chronic public health problems will not be solved solely by individual actions, but by coming together to forge a society where healthy choices are easy and popular.

Systems Change for Health uses a transdisciplinary approach incorporating theories, methods, tools and case evidence from public health, public policy, public administration and urban planning to teach the concepts of effective policy change and strengthen practitioners’ skills and competencies.  The courses are sequential with the concepts, tools, case examples, and activities progressively building across each course.

Intended Audience

Systems Change for Health is designed for government administrators and staff, their non-profit partners, and community groups or individual citizens interested in enhancing the systems, policies, and built environments that structure the way we live.  Participants need no systems or policy experience prior to attending.
